Customer rating is 5 of 5  A classic, poetic translation of literature's greatest treasure   2010-03-04
By David Wisehart (Los Angeles, CA USA)
The Divine Comedy is essential reading, and John Ciardi's is an essential English translation.

Many years ago, back in high school, I cut my teeth on Ciardi's verse rendering. I've read half a dozen translations since, but Ciardi's is the one I keep coming back to. It is less accurate than Singleton's version, and less heart-wrenchingly beautiful than Dante's Italian, but Ciardi's gift to the ages is compelling and lovely and stands the test of time.

Note that this book is 2" thick and will take up substantial room in a suitcase. The paper appears to be of low quality (better paper would have been thinner, and probably not a great deal more costly), although the quality of the printing is good.

With the advent of word processors, end notes are an unnecessary nuisance. Footnotes would be preferable, especially in a work like "The Divine Comedy" where the notes are so important.
Customer rating is 5 of 5  Amazing translation   2010-02-13
By Mintie (MA USA)
This is one of the most poetic and beautifully translated work of the Divine Comedy. John Ciardi is a genius, and his use of semi-terza rima clearly requires great literary talent, especially with a translation in English. Reading this translation gives me a sense of not only what the content of the book is like, but also how it would have artistically sounded and felt. It's so well done that sometimes it's hard to believe that this is only a translation of the masterpiece. Ciardi also provides a summary page before each cantos, and very extensive and helpful notes. I wholeheartedly recommend this translation.

This book is a classic of medieval literature. It demonstrates European thought during the 13th century, and also demonstrates a timeless human perspective. Dante was well read in the science of his time, the great literature, the metaphysics of his day, and all this reflects in his work. This translation is great! I found myself passing through the circles of hell, up a mountain on my way to paradise, and engulfed in a great light, all with great enjoyment, and even with a reverence. It took me one month to finish it, but I finished a few other books during that month as well. I recommend this as an essential book for anyone wanting to round out their soul.

In my opinion this is the most readable version of the Divine Comedy in English. Beautifully done by the author with notes that are very enlightening on poetry translation and Dante..

Great for studying comparative religions!

If reading this book I highly recommend The Three Mountains or The Mystery of the Golden Blossom by Samael Aun Weor
