Description

An Agatha Prize Excellent Novel Nominee

Named One of the Century's Excellent 100 Mysteries by the Independent

Mystery Booksellers Association

From New York Times bestselling author Laurie R. King comes the book this introduced us to the ingenious Mary Russell–Sherlock Holmes mysteries

In 1915, Sherlock Holmes is retired and quietly engaged in the learn of honeybees when a young woman literally stumbles into him on the Sussex Downs. Fifteen years old, gawky, egotistical, and recently orphaned, the young Mary Russell displays an intellect to impress even Sherlock Holmes--and match him wit for wit. Under his reluctant tutelage, this very modern twentieth-century woman proves a deft protégée and a fitting associate for the Victorian detective. In their first case mutually, they must track down a kidnapped American senator's daughter and confront a truly cunning adversary--a bomber who has set trip wires for the sleuths and who will stop at nothing to end their partnership. Full of brilliant deductions, disguises, and dangers, this first book of the Mary Russell--Sherlock Holmes mysteries is "wonderfully original and entertaining . . . absorbing from beginning to end" (Booklist).

Customer Reviews

Customer rating is 5 of 5  Wonderful, satisfying, completely successful return of Holmes   2010-03-18
By N. Ferguson (Ohio)
Many reviews here detail aspects of plot and character development. I will simply say briefly that:

1) Holmes is beautifully rendered and true to Arthur Conan Doyle's vision.
2) Mary Russell is a wonderful character and a witty, insightful, delightful narrator.
3) The relationship between Holmes and Mary is developed with an emotional richness and truth which made me run, not walk, to purchase the next 4 books in the series.

One of my very favorite books this year! Highly recommended.
Customer rating is 5 of 5  Much higher than a mere seven percent...   2010-03-18

This first novel in the series starts out, I felt, rather slowly and, while constantly enjoyable, it does take a while to thoroughly "hook" the reader. I'm not going to complain about that too much, though; it is, after all, an "origin" story, and has to gradually introduce us to the young Mary Russell in such a way as to make our discovery of her character feel natural while at the same time taking us through her early maturation as Holmes's new apprentice--a potentially monotonous task. It does an admirable job of transitioning the kid we first meet into the burgeoning detective and scholar she has become by the end of the book without becoming tedious or too overly focused on the minutiae of her education and when the suspense is rolling, it does so very well.

The book is divided into segments and glosses over a large chunk of time (a good idea I think and furthermore said events are later depicted in a separate novel of their own) which can break the build of suspense and perhaps impede the story's flow somewhat, but personally I found that this segmentation provided me the chance to put the book down briefly and get something done before diving back in for the next chunk.

It was overall a very engrossing book that did a magnificent job of both capturing the feel of a traditional Holmes story while at the same time adding something new to the mythos. I enjoyed the characters, mood, and setting so much that I promptly had to go and acquire the next few in the series, and am currently happily reading my way through--although the next few don't have those convenient segments, so I have to steel myself for long stretches of productivity after finishing each one before I permit myself to start the next, or I fear that I'd get nothing done at all and have a lovely time doing so.

A word of warning, then, before you buy: these books are highly addictive, and will leave you feeling disconcertingly immersed in the world of Doyle's (and King's) Holmes. Read (and enjoy) at your own risk.
Customer rating is 4 of 5  Unique twist on Sherlock Holmes   2010-03-03
By N. Cousino (Massachusetts, USA)
Laurie King has taken good Sherlock Holmes novels and given them a twist - they are from the perspective of Sherlock's new partner and eventually his wife - Mary Russell. With her engaging writing style Laurie pulls us into the stories and shows us that a young female can be just as intellectual and clever when it comes to sleuthing, and she develops the character of Mary Russell in to a spectacular young woman worthy of be-friending and partnering the legendary Sherlock Holmes.

Highly recommended - with each story you can't help but wonder where Sherlock's and Mary's investigative adventures will lead them next!
Customer rating is 5 of 5  Pleasantly surprised.   2010-03-01
By Michael Krenzer (Hammond, IN)
I have to admit I expected little, despite the excellent reviews, when I ordered this book. Having read every scrap of the original Doyle more than once, I figured it would be like reading the post-Ian Fleming Bond books...a pale shadow of the original. Not so!

The claims that this is a different twist on the Holmesian mystery using the premise of the original Holmes as a jumping off point is completely accurate. After the first 50 pages the concept and the characters drew me in. The story moved along at moderate clip and the transisitions were well done if occasionally abrupt. Soon I even forgot to try an compare this to the original sagas just enjoyed the story.

Overall, a series I looked forward to reading more of (past tense due to the fact that my review comes months after moving on to other books in the series).
Customer rating is 3 of 5  Inaccurate Portrayal   2010-01-17
By G. Dolomiti (Ponte nelle ALPI, BL Italy)
The dialogue between Russel and Holmes which ensues on pages 6, 7, 8 does NOT reflect Holmes's mode of speaking, nor of thinking/reasoning. It does not ring true to the character as I perceive him through Watson's character sketches.
