Description

Contemporary photographs this cleverly capture a kid’s mood or personality—whether this’s a big, toothy grin or a teary tantrum—are effortlessly created together with the tips and techniques explored in this in-depth handbook. Often called “way of life photography,” modern techniques such as tightly cropped shut-ups, vignettes, wide angles, and shallow depths produce pictures this are markedly less stiff and extra expressive than traditional portraitures. From capturing excellent expressions and body language to integrating meaningful locations into the shoot to further express the subject’s personality, this guide thoroughly explains how photographers can develop their picture-storytelling skills to develop spectacular portraits. Advice on creating platinum and chocolate hued prints, vibrant color scenes, neat grayscale pictures, and using unusual textures or results is in addition integrated.

Customer rating is 4 of 5  Perfect business and creative guide to jumpstart a career in children's photography   2010-01-18
By Sacramento Book Review (Sacramento, CA)
Photographer and author Tamara Lackey offers fresh insights and solid know-how in her book, //Children's Portrait Photography.// Gone are the days of Little Lord Fauntleroy pants and painted backdrops and murals. Today's trend in children and family photography is relaxed, expressive and natural. Parents see it in glossy magazines and envision their children in these modern portraits. Tamara Lackey shows us how to do it right. All levels of photographers who wish to break into the children's photography market can benefit from this book, as Lackey covers the basics of portrait photography, the psychology of dealing with children and delivering killer shots that sell big. Filled with beautiful images from Lackey's own portfolio, the book is a great look-book for children's portraits. A noteworthy chapter in the book contains Lackey's refreshing honesty about the mistakes she made in the early years of her business. Written in easy conversational style, any photographer can feel her pain, share in her triumphs and learn from her photography business anecdotes. Pick it up for giant dab of inspiration.

Many of the reviews for this book seem to be written by the same person. Not much substance to the book. Book has some illustrations along with descriptions, but its missing the meat and potatos that would explain what was done, and how it was done.
Customer rating is 5 of 5  An Amazing Book   2009-10-20
By Margaret M. Van Etten (Wellsvile, New York)
When I received this book this afternoon my intention was to leaf through it before starting dinner. Wrong! This informative, beautifully executed book was full of the kind of photographs I strive to create. As beautiful and striking as they are, I found the authors words and advice equally profound and riveting. Tamara Lackey is as direct, down to earth and detailed as her lovely photographs. She taps into the very personal, spiritual aspect of taking these amazing pictures as well as the practical details of docementing the magic of childhood. Needless to say, my husband is picking up pizza on his way home from work, I am reading it cover to cover!
Customer rating is 5 of 5  Very Good!   2009-08-20

The author did a very nice job in providing information and sharing her experience in the business. If you are looking for technical tips, or how to start on photography, this is NOT the book for you. If you are looking for tips about what is the best way to approach and handle your little clients -from a personality point of view- or add to your own knowledge, this is definitely a valid source of information. I was very pleased with the book and learned lots of aspects I ignored at the time. By the way: If you are in the STUDIO portrait business or thinking of it, this is NOT a book for you either. Content is mostly related to outdoor photography.
Customer rating is 1 of 5  No art here.   2009-07-13

Talks about the business of children's photography not the art. 2 maybe 3 diagrams of how the picture was taken. No technical info about the photos. Many of the other reviews are more than likey written by friends of the author or folks interested in selling the book. Great pictures in the book and you can get some good ideas on what to look for. Would purchase other books if you are looking for lighting setups and what the picture looks like. Very disappointing overall.
