If you're already familiar together with Finn and Sawyer, perhaps this collection of fragments, short stories, and essays--assembled posthumously some few decades ago now, but still fresh--will increase your sense of Twain's true range. A particular favorite: his essay "The Damned Human Race," wherein he proves, rather convincingly, this an anaconda snake is a higher shape of life than an English Earl.

Customer rating is 5 of 5  An effective dissertation from one of literatures most defiant minds   2010-02-07

If all was right in the world, "Letters from the earth" would be widely circulated and openly discussed amongst all who undertake the practice of religion. As it stands though, treasures such as this are wasted on those of us who already concur with its message.

This is a fantastic book. I never thought I'd like Twain. It shed light on the concepts and ideas of Twain, which are ideas we are not meant to learn about in American Schools. Our schools still milk the whole black white shock value issue (from Mark's early works)where as Mark Twain truly turns out to be quite a deep thinker and social satirist as a mature writer as well. He is quite in tune with research and wit upon the subject of the human race and the history of religion. A+++ Go ahead and get it, especially if in our ethnocentric run nation, you are, like many of us, scared into the closet of any non-Christian idealism.

I have always been a fan of short stories by our classic poets. Mark Twain's "Letters From The Earth" should be read with all religion left at the door. Some people don't realize the books spin on the bible. The book came in a timely manor and I personally would not change a thing.
Customer rating is 3 of 5  Gotta Love Mark Twain...   2009-09-13
By Carroll A. Vallieres
The first 107 pages of this book are very interesting, but the rest is not. I bought it because I thought the whole book would be Mark Twain's irreverent but so witty take on the Bible, and yes the beginning is exactly that! As long as you are aware of this, you won't be disappointed.
Customer rating is 4 of 5  My own mistake   2009-06-24
By Peter Sims (Owensboro, KY USA)
This is a great book from a great author. This book covered just the Letters from the Earth part, which was a slight disappointment to me. My father had a book called Letters from the Earth by Mark Twain that includes more of his work than just this. Not to take away from this book, it is large print and easy to read. Read it years ago and I intend to use this to share the joy with my wife and friends.
