What Remains: The Life and Work of Sally Mann
Sally Mann: Proud Flesh
Description
"Mann's subjects are her small kids (a boy, a girl, and a new baby), often shot when they're sick or harm or just naked. Nosebleeds, cuts, hives, chicken pox, swollen eyes, vomiting--the usual trials of childhood--can be alarmingly stunning, thrillingly sensual moments in Mann's portrait album. Her ambivalence concerning motherhood--her delight and despair--pushes Mann to delve deeper into the steaming mess of family life than much of us are willing to go. What she comes up together with is astonishing." --Vince Aletti,
The Village Voice
"Immediate Family, which was published in 1990, must be counted as one of the excellent photograph books of our time. It is a singularly great evocation of childhood from inside and not including ..." --Luc Sante,

CHILDHOOD REVISITED THROUGH THE PAGES OF A BOOK
2010-03-08
By Randall L. Turner (Aurora, Co USA)
I found my copy of Sally Mann's "Immediate Family" while browsing through the clearance section of a favorite bookstore. The title of the book caught my attention and aroused my curiosity, so I picked it up and started flipping through the pages of photographs. I must admit that I felt as though I might have been intruding on this family's privacy as I looked at pictures of what I deemed to be very personal, private moments. The images in Immediate Family are of a very private and personal nature - the type of images that most parents keep stashed away and only share with family and very close friends. I was surprised that the photographer - the mother of the children on the pages of the book - would be willing to publish such pictures. But as I continued to thumb through this book, I came to appreciate the way the photographer effectively captured the beauty and innocence of youth. I couldn't help but reminisce of growing up in an old house in the country next to a strip of woods, much like the setting in Mrs. Mann's book. The beautiful, natural pictures of Emmett, Jessie and Virginia living the rural life and engaging in the activities country kids enjoy on hot, muggy summer days reminded me of my youth; pictures of children skinny-dipping at the fishing hole and getting muddy from head to toe; pictures of young kids with bumps, bruises and bloody boo-boos of varying degrees (Jessie had to have her forehead sewn up, as one photo shows); pictures of unclothed children rolling in the wet grass, playing, having fun, just being kids. There was one particular photo which caused me to chuckle, mostly due to it's sheer relatability. It's a picture of Virginia, the youngest of the three kids, looking angelic in peaceful slumber while lying on a urine-soaked mattress. Isn't this the type of photograph parents love to share with the boyfriends and girlfriends of our children when they're teenagers? Another photo I especially enjoyed was one of young Emmett and his dog sprawled on a blanket in the yard, having a nap together. It is a truly beautiful picture. I read some of the less-than-favorable reviews on this book before I set out to write this one. I can appreciate the opinions of those who are uncomfortable with the pictures of the naked children in this book. Such is the attitude of the society in which we live. But there's nothing dirty or pornographic in this book. The nude photos are tastefully presented and beautifully depict the uninhibited innocence of children. As a child, I remember having the same attitude toward being seen naked as the kids in this book. But that was a long time ago, back in a time before I was taught that being seen naked was unacceptable and dirty...

Not Cool

Sally Mann exploited her children for notoriety's sake. She knows it. Every time she is interviewed and questioned about these pictures, you can see the tension. Her body language confirms her regret. So-called liberal minds endorse the nude photographs, reassuring each other that it's OK to look. It's not. What child would say, "Let me take my clothes off, mommy, so you can take a picture of me. I'll be the most popular kid in school." Her success came at a heavy price, one that she won't have to pay...but her kids will.

I love these photographs. They have amazing soul and power inside them. Brilliant exposures and a great looking family.

I think the world owes Sally Mann and her family some kind of karmic debt for the beauty and grace that they share with us in this book. I know many of the shots were painstakingly staged and that her printing skills (and lenses) intentionally warp certain scenes, but this collection still allows you to escape into the feeling that you are witnessing an endless carefree summer in one of the most idyllic settings a child could imagine. The shots of her cabin and the river scenes alone could probably result in millions of unfilled prozac prescriptions -- it's that calming. I recommend this book to photography buffs, nature lovers, stressed-out insomniacs and mothers everwhere.
