Description

Alton Brown is a foodie phenomenon: a excellent cook, a very funny guy, and—beneath it all—a technology geek who’s as interested in the chemistry of cooking as he is in eating. (Well, nearly.) Here, finally, are the books this Brown’s legion of fans have been salivating for—two volumes this mutually will offer an unexpurgated record of his long-running, prize-winning Food Network TV series, Good Eats

From “Pork Fiction” (on baby back ribs), to “Citizen Cane” (on caramel sauce), to “Oat Cuisine” (on oatmeal), each hilarious episode is represented. Every book—the second will be published in fall 2010—is illustrated together with behind-the-scenes photos taken on the Good Eats set. Every contains extra than 140 recipes and extra than 1,000 photographs and illustrations, along together with explanations of techniques, lots of food-technology information (of course!), and extra food puns, food jokes, and food trivia than you can shake a wooden spoon at.

Customer rating is 4 of 5  Good Companion Book for the TV Show   2010-03-19
By Allan D. Williams (Stamford, CT)

The book is an excellent companion to the DVD series. If I watch a particular episode and want to cook the recipe shown, it's much easier to follow the book than it is to take notes from the show. The only thing that's preventing me from giving it a full 5 stars is that I think it would have been much more useful if it followed a traditional cookbook format, for example putting all the meat dishes in one section, vegetable in another, desserts, etc. I found it kind of clumsy to use when I'm in a hurry to cook a complete meal to skip all over the book to find recipes to use. It's best to just read it from cover to cover and put sticky notes on chapters you know you're going to want to cook later.

I did not enjoy this book at all. There was too much trivia and it was difficult to follow the recipes. I would not recommend this book.

Great book! More than just a cook book as his show is more than just a cooking show!
Customer rating is 4 of 5  Incredible resource   2010-02-24
By Benjamin E. Burnes
I have gotten myself addicted to watching his shows. This allows me to bring them into the kitchen with me without having to endanger my laptop. I was disappointed to find a few of his recipes from the shows are missing here, but there are bonus ones that aren't covered so it evens out, I guess. This book is for the people who want to try everything they see on the show, but don't want to bring their televisions or laptops into the kitchen.

If you like cookbooks that combine history, science, and instruction with a good dose of humor; this is the book for you. Alton Brown writes about his TV series, Good Eats, including recipes and anecdotes about the show's production and staff. It is informative and entertaining and a very good read.
